In the Issue Analysis Paper, you have select a topic, issue or subject relating to sports psychology and now you are asked to analyze the topic in the first half of the paper. First, identify an important Issue related to sport psychology and describes that issue in detail during the first half of the paper. Then, in the paper’s second half, analyze the issue and suggests solutions. Analysis requires breaking a subject, issue, or event into its constituent elements so that the assumptions or components are made clear and the relationships between them are made explicit. Thus, through the analysis paper, the student demonstrates comprehension of the material being analyzed. In that Sport Psychology is interdisciplinary, you can borrow topics and subjects from other areas in which you have an interest, but we must be sure the topic relates to sports psychology. Issues can include mental or physical conditions, performance, goal- setting and imagery, aggression and violence, group processes, competition, etc. The paper is not a personal opinion or reflection style paper. As such, it should NOT include personal story or observation sharing, but must analyze the issue; the personal, you or I, must be left out of your thinking and writing. You should write as though your readers are intelligent but not fully informed about the topic. Your paper must be developed using research material from at least five sources. You may not use your textbook as a source. You may also use the Internet for some of your material as long as you access scholarly resources and not popular media such as Sports Illustrated, Psychology Today, opinion .com sites or blogs, About.com sites or others that do summarizing for readers, abstracts without reading the full article, etc. NO WIKIPEDIA articles may be used for these papers or any other writing assignment in this course. All sources must be listed on “References” pages (not “Works Cited or “Bibliography” – those aren’t APA format terms, and without the quotation marks) attached to the end of the papers. You must also cite the material within the body of your paper, using the American Psychological Association (APA) format (this is the citation format used within the narrative of your textbook). Your paper should contain a cover page with your name and the title. Papers are to be typed and double-spaced using a font size of 10 to 12, no larger, throughout, including the cover page. The pages should be full and margins should be no larger than 1″ on all sides. The cover page and “References” page are in addition to the five-page length requirement. Introduction

Sports psychology is a multifaceted subject which draws from various disciplines including physiology which studies how the involvement in sporting activities and exercise affects psychology and the fitness of people. It is aimed at improving and ensuring optimal performance for individuals who engage in various sports. From dealing with injuries to handling poor performance are just some of the issues addressed by sports psychologists. Like other professionals, athletes and other sports professionals face challenges which require therapy. Therefore, the proposed topic for this analysis paper is how stress and anxiety affect sports performance in men and women.

Summary of Stress and Anxiety in Sports

It is hard to consider that athletes are affected by stress and anxiety. Usually, there are acceptable levels of anxiety beyond which the effects can be adverse which can cost or negatively affect their careers. Failure or even the fear of it heightens these levels and can cause a considerable amount of damage. It is therefore in this light that the importance of sports psychologist is reiterated. Issues in sports psychology are usually anchored around stress and anxiety. Taking, for instance, an issue like goal setting, typically when things do not turn out as expected the result will most likely be stress and anxiety. Additionally, the proposed topic will be strongly supported by the following sources.

Stenling, A. (2017). Fear of failure, psychological stress, and burnout among adolescent athletes competing in high level sport. Scandinavian journal of medicine & science in sports, 27(12), 2091-2102.

According to Stenling, psychological stress is addressed with the issue of adolescent athletes taking center stage. This directly applies to the selected topic as the issue is more common in teenagers who despite being athletes, for example, they are likely to be grappling with other issues attributed to their age. The research provides a different perspective of addressing the issue by considering a specific group which might be prone to stress.

Belz, J., Heidari, J., Levenig, C., Hasenbring, M., Kellmann, M., & Kleinert, J. (2018). Stress and risk for depression in competitive athletes suffering from back pain–Do age and gender matter?. European journal of sports science, 1-9.

The author, Belz examines the issue on a relatively different dimension whereby the aspect of gender is discussed. The research sees to find out how an athlete’s gender affects levels of stress and anxiety. Blending ideas from this informative journal will considerably enrich the paper by giving it a multidimensional aspect. The journal further explores the possible sources of the condition in question with the aim of exhaustively covering the subject.

Kellmann, M., Pelka, M., Kölling, S., & Heidari, J. (2017). Monitoring the recovery-stress state in athletes. In Sport, Recovery, and Performance (pp. 17-32). Routledge.

In his writing, the author Kellmann notes that for most sports people, stress and anxiety are not very uncommon. Addressing the situation and being able to manage the condition is a recipe for success as far as sports are concerned. The article perfectly fits this paper as part of the remedy to the proposed problem. The article conforms to the research as it will aid in recommendations on the way forward. The data analysis of the article is informative and will help in making valid conclusions.

Quinn, E. (2003, November 19). Use These Tips for Overcoming Performance Anxiety in Sports. Retrieved from https://www.verywellfit.com/sports-psychology-for-performance-anxiety-3119436

The researcher Quinn provides insights that the general public also suffers from the stated conditions at a rate which is arguably comparable with that of those who engage in sporting activities. This article provides the research with some issues which are unanswered as part of broadening the literature in this field to serve as a reference point. The curiosity of the reader is heightened and this, in turn, triggers more research and more understanding of the subject.

This article draws different perspectives relating to mental toughness and how anxiety affects sports psychology. Dwindling performance among others is a pointer to stress and anxiety for a particular individual. If not well managed the after-effects can be dire whereby some victims lose their careers while others even contemplate suicide. Coaches, team managers, and all stakeholders should, therefore, take the burden of detecting any symptom of the conditions and act appropriately. Sportsmen and women need education and training of how to deal with the hurdles they are likely to encounter, and how to deal with them.
